Volume Five, Issue 4

Mikayla Beaudrie

Orchid blooms
Beneath the hue
Of porch lights
Growing larger as
Night becomes darker.
The time change
Makes all appear
Smaller, shorter—
Save the orchids
Whose tiny, pink canines
Protrude from fierce mandibles
Below jagged petals
Mocking dear Venus.

Mikayla Beaudrie: “I completed my MA in English from the University of Florida. I currently teach an array of rhetoric and composition courses at the University of North Florida. My research centers on the relationship between blackness and nature, and the existence of a Black gothic rhetoric.”
