History

i almost failed history class
and my mom used to fold
the corners of my report card
and ask,

“why don’t you care?”

and i’d sit at our kitchen table
and attempt to stare at my notes:
half-written sentences such as
“macdonald decided to…”

-- i forget the rest;

my teacher pulled me aside,
after class and he folded his
arms over his sweater vest
and said
“you’ve got to know what came
                                                    before you;”

gestures with his fingers to
the room and all i see is
a poster of napoleon
and a blue globe on his desk--

i’ve been looking at the wrong
side of the world, ever since.

list of brown and beautiful things--
